Understanding the urinary system
INCONTINENCE CARE
The physical inability to
control urination, more
commonly known as incontinence, affects at least one in
ten people over the age of 65,
but 50% of the incontinent population is under 55.
Although many people seem to
be embarrassed to talk about it
- even to their own doctors -
awareness of the condition is
crucial. Understanding the
symptoms and causes will help
a person receive proper
treatment.
Severe cases of
incontinence can affect
every aspect
of a person's life.
Incontinence is a physical
disorder. The key phrase is
inability to control urination,
not unwillingness. Different
categories of incontinence have
varying causes, and somewhat
different symptoms.
Help is available for everybody
with incontinence, so never
assume it is something you're
just going to have to endure.

Understanding the urinary system:
A thorough understanding of incontinence
begins with a look at the urinary tract.
Urine is produced by the kidneys and flows
down two tubes, called ureters, to the bladder,
where it is collected and stored until eliminated
from the body. Urine then moves from the
bladder down another tube, the urethra.
The urethra is much shorter in women than in
men and may be one reason why women
experience bladder control problems most
frequently. The sphincter muscles surrounding
the urethra control urine flow from the body.
Urination depends on learned behavior and
on reflexes in the spinal cord and brain. The
behavior is learned when we are toilet
trained as children. The reflex is triggered by
a physical sense of urgency as urine collects
in the bladder and pressure builds up.
Learned behavior tells us to find the toilet;
the spinal cord and brain reflexes take over;
the bladder contracts; the sphincter muscles
relax; and a stream of urine is released from
the body via the urethra.
Most people's incontinence can be cured or
greatly improved after proper diagnosis and
treatment. Simple changes in diet, pelvic
muscle exercises, timed toileting, prescription
drugs, bladder retraining, and other
procedures have all been successful and are
frequently used in combination with the array
of products readily available to consumers.
