ELASTIC HEALTH SUPPORTS

As the baby-boom generation continues to age, consumer trends toward maintaining physical activity levels are expected to rise. There is also an increasing desire of less active consumers who are treating or trying to prevent the advancement of chronic medical conditions. Top

Acute vs. Chronic Pain
Although we would all prefer never getting injured while doing sports, it's almost inevitable. When injuries happen they are of two general categories: Acute or chronic. Acute injuries usually arise from a sudden jolt that impairs muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints or bones. Acute injuries are sharp and severe, but often last for only a short period of time.

Strains and sprains describe types of acute injuries. Strains involve stretching and tearing of tissues and muscles.

Sprains are classified by grades.

Grade 1: Mild sprain. There is only mild discomfort and minimal amounts of swelling.

Grade 2: Moderate sprain. There are varying levels of pain, swelling and instability. There may be discoloration and an accompanying feeling the joint is giving way at the moment of injury. It can take up to one month to recover from a Grade 2 sprain.

Grade 3: Severe sprain. This is a complete rupture of the affected ligament. There may or may not be pain at the time of the injury. There is usually no stability - discoloration along with swelling are evident. It may involve many months or years before full recovery is made. Chronic injuries arise from too much repetitive activity focused on one particular joint, ultimately causing tissues to break down. Top

Treatment
Once an injury occurs, applying treatment as quickly as possible is crucial. The main forms of treatment involve pressure, ice, elevation and rest.

Pressure: Applying pressure helps to keep swelling to a minimum. Wrap the area with a Tensor* bandage moderately tightly.

Make sure not to cut off circulation.

Ice: Ice should be applied for 15-20 minutes every hour, up to three hours. As the area begins to numb, remove the ice. Once the damaged area returns to normal, re-apply ice for 20 minutes.

Elevation: Elevating the affected area above the heart helps facilitate blood flow and keeps swelling down to a minimum. Top
