What You Need To Know
Vitamin Supplements

Vitamins are components of natural foods our bodies need for normal growth and functioning.

Most people can get the vitamins they need by eating a well balanced diet. Unfortunately, this is sometimes easier said than done, which is why some people take vitamin supplements.

Nutrient: Vitamin A
Function: Helps maintain normal vision. Important for the normal growth of bones and teeth.
Food Sources: Fish liver, animal liver, egg yolks, milk, butter, green and yellow fruits and vegetables

Nutrient: Vitamin D
Function: Regulates calcium and phosphorous necessary for sound bones and teeth.
Food Sources: Fish liver fish, fortified dairy products. eggs

Nutrient: Vitamin E
Function: Protects the body's supply of Vitamin A. Helps maintain healthy body cells and muscles.
Food Sources: Vegetable Oils, dark leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans

Nutrient: Folic Acid
Function: Required for the maintenance of healthy blood.
Food Sources: Liver, meat, poultry, green vegetables, fruit, whole grains

Nutrient: Vitamin B-1 (thiamine)
Function: Aids in the metabolism of carbohydrates for the release of energy. necessary Assists in the normal function of the nervous system, heart and digestive system. Important for normal growth.
Food Sources: Brown rice, beans, meat, poultry, nuts, some vegetables

Nutrient: Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin)
Function: Necessary for healthy skin, hair and normal vision. Required for normal growth and development.
Food Sources: Beans, cheese, eggs, fish, meat, milk poultry, spinach and yogurt

Nutrient: Niacin
Function: Helps maintain healthy tissue, particularly the skin, nervous system and gastro- intestinal tract. Assists in the release of energy. Required for normal growth and development.
Food Sources: Meat, fish, poultry, milk eggs, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, whole wheat

Nutrient: Vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine)
Function: Essential for building protein. Plays an important role in the production of red blood cells and nervous system activity.
Food Sources: Meat, poultry fish, eggs, whole wheat, vegetables

Nutrient: Vitamin B-12
Function: Essential for the growth of red blood cells and nerve tissue. Plays a part in building protein.
Food Sources: Cheese, eggs, organ meats, seafood, milk

Nutrient: Vitamin C
Function: Essential for maintaining healthy teeth, gums, bones and blood vessels. Important for the formation of collagen, a protein required for tissue growth and repair.
Food Sources: Citrus fruits, green vegetables, berries
