Mineral Supplements

Minerals are naturally occurring elements found in the earth. They get passed into human foods grown in soil and into meat food sources through the plants animals eat.

A well-balanced diet usually provides people with the minerals they need, however, sometimes mineral supplements are required.

Function: Essential for the formation and repair of bones and teeth.
Food Sources: Milk, milk products, green vegetables

Nutrient: Iron
Function: Necessary for the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells which transports oxygen around the body.
Food Sources:
Meat, poultry, whole grains, enriched breads, green vegetables

Nutrient: Magnesium
Function: Necessary for the proper functioning of nerves.
Food Sources: Green leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains, milk

Nutrient: Phosphorous
Function: Essential for the formation and maintenance of the bones and teeth. Important for the breakdown of fat, release of energy, and muscle and nerve functions.
Food Sources: Meat, seafood, dairy products, many vegetables, nuts, yeast

Nutrient: Chromium
Function: Assists in energy production within the body.
Food Sources: Brown rice, cheese, meat, whole grains, yeast

Nutrient: Copper
Function: Involved in blood cell production and tissue metabolism.
Food Sources: Whole grains, green vegetables, shellfish, yeast

Nutrient: Fluorine
Function: Involved in the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.
Food Sources: Natural water supplies, fluoridated water depending on the municipality, rivers, lakes, streams

Nutrient: Iodine
Function: Found in thyroid hormones involved in the regulation of energy metabolism.
Food Sources: Kelp, fresh seafoods, table salt

Nutrient: Manganese
Function: Necessary for development of skeletal and connective tissue.
Food Sources: Nuts, whole grains, brown rice, green leafy vegetables

Nutrient: Selenium
Function: Involved in fat metabolism.
Food Sources: Meat, grains, nuts, vegetables, yeast

Nutrient: Zinc
Function: Necessary for the growth and repair of tissue.
