What
You Need To Know
Mens Sexual Health
What
is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
ED is most
often defined as the persistent inability to achieve
and/or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory
sexual performance. It is estimated that 2-3 million
Canadian men experience some form of erectile
dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction appears in various
degrees and should not always be thought of as a complete
lack of erections. In fact 81% of ED patients have mild
to moderate dysfunction/difficulty.
What
causes Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
Once thought
to be "all in your mind, ED is now known to be most
often associated with other medical conditions such as
diabetes, high blood pressure and depression. While ED is
not a direct result of aging, it occurs more frequently
in older men. A 70-year-old man is three times more
likely than a 40-year-old man to suffer from complete
erectile dysfunction. This is because older men are more
likely to suffer from medical conditions like high blood
pressure or diabetes, two of the risk factors associated
with erectile dysfunction.

When
should I talk to my doctor?
Remember that
it's common to feel embarrassed but millions of men and
their partners experience sexual challenges to varying
degrees at different stages of their lives. Also know
that any conversation you have with your doctor or
PharmAssist(tm) pharmacist remains strictly confidential.
Your doctor will ask questions about your medical history
that may help identify an underlying cause of your sexual
difficulty. A family physician is often a good first
choice. In most cases, they will be able to help you.
However, in some cases, he or she may refer you to a
specialist, either a gynecologist (for women) or a
urologist (mostly men but occasion ally women). Sex
therapists are also familiar with every aspect of sexual
life and without providing medical treatment, they have
access to all the resources you may need, either as
individuals or as couples.
Can
ED be treated?
Remember that
sexual dysfunctions, including ED, can be treated, at any
age. Safe and effective treatment options are now
available to you. But only by talking to your healthcare
provider can you obtain the answers to your questions,
and they can help you find and decide which solution is
best suited to you. With people living and staying active
longer, healthcare professionals have helped millions of
people deal with every aspect of their health.
